The First Step Changes It All

Recca and Yanagi

Recca and Yanagi in front of a Tree

One day Hanabishi Recca is sitting outside eating his hot dog when a voice catches his attention.  He looks up to a see a pretty young girl with a group of little kids, and there goes his heart and his lunch.  The girl who has captured Recca's interest is Sakoshita Yanagi, a classmate who has the ability to heal other people's injuries.  As the two get to know each other, Recca must deal with the secrets of his own past while simultaneously protecting Yanagi from the evil people who want to kidnap her and exploit her special healing powers.

Recca is a smart-aleck (well slightly hehe) who makes it his mission in life to antagonize people.  Just look at the way he's always provoking Domon and Fuko in the first few episodes.  Still, the guy's got lots of guts and the heart of a gambler bent on winning it all.  The word quitter is definitely not part of Hanabishi Recca's vocabulary.  I guess some might say he likes living on the edge, but I see him more as a fun-loving guy.  Yanagi on the other hand is a quiet girl with the most high-pitched, squeaky voice I have yet to encounter.  Definitely not a tomboy, this girl can cook up a storm (do I sense a Belldandy type here?).  She also has this helpless air about her that practically calls out for a knight-defender, which is probably the reason why Recca feels this need to protect her (other than the fact that you could say she saved his life with her healing powers once). Recca and Yanagi

If there ever was a case of opposites attracting or a different types of charges being drawn together sorta thing, then this couple is definitely it.  I have never seen any two people so different from each other.  I mean, Recca's not an outright rebel but he definitely does not fit the student body president preppy boy mold.  Yanagi, on the other hand, is a helpless girl whose entire being practically screams "i'm the damsel in distress".  But one good thing I like about these two is that there are definitely no love polygons in this story!  It's Recca loves Yanagi and vice versa, with no annoying third person to get in the way.  And that of course delights me since I don't quite handle the fifty guys falling for one girl scenario all that well. Even though I don't quite love Yanagi, I still think these two make a horribly cute couple.
