I have to admit that Kenshin and Kaoru must be
one of the most popular couples in all of anime fandom. Himura Kenshin
is a wandering swordsman who travels through Japan in order to atone for
his past sins (he was the Hitokiri Battousai during the Bakumatsu before
the Meiji Restoration and killed tons of people). One morning, as Kenshin
is walking through the streets of Tokyo, he is attacked by a young girl named
Kamiya Kaoru. She accuses him of being a serial killer, but instead
Kenshin ends up saving Kaoru's life. As a result of a series of events,
Kenshin agrees to stay at Kaoru's dojo with the understanding that he may
walk out at any moment.
Kenshin is a hero with a definite tragic past. Due to an extremely guilty conscience and the horrible way his first marriage ended, the man is extremely repressed and seems oblivious to Kaoru's feelings *sheesh, wake up and appreciate Kenshin!* Kenshin also refuses to show his feelings for Kaoru because he fears that his enemies may attack her in order to get to him (excuses, excuses). But the reason I love Kenshin so much is that he doesn't mind doing house chores. Washing laundry seems to be his permanent occupation at the Kamiya dojo. He also babysits and is a wonder with Dr. Genzai's two granddaughters. |
What I like about Kaoru is that she's got guts! So she sometimes finds herself in the damsel in distress situation, but at least she's not the whiny "please come and save me!" type. Like many other anime heroines, Kaoru cannot cook to save her life, which makes it fun for Sanosuke and Yahiko to tease her. She's also the master of her father's dojo, so she's slightly tomboyish too. But Kaoru has qualties which I believe Kenshin really needs. She puts some fun into his dreary life and allows him to be the silly kid he never had a chance to be. Kaoru also accepts Kenshin for who he is, Battousai, rurouni, and all. A companion who is willing to go through the good and bad times, if only all of us were so lucky hehe. Now the only thing left to make it all perfect is if Kenshin would get over his past and move on to a better future =D |
I'll have to admit that Kenshin and Kaoru are my favorite couple too (yah, yah, i love jumping on that darn "fun" bandwagon hehe). They're so cute together, and someone once said told me that it's amazing how protective Kenshin is of Kaoru. I'll have to admit it's true. I've never seen two people who need each other more. In fact, I wouldn't mind having a guy like Kenshin around to do my laundry for me either hehe. The only problem is that Nobuhiro Watsuki doesn't seem to like completely romantic scenes so there are no real sappy moments in the anime. However, from what I know about the manga, apparently these two do settle down and have a happy family one day, which makes me sigh in relief because if anyone ever deserved a perfect home complete with three kids and a picket fence, it would be our rurouni.
