Kamiya Kaoru

Kenshin meets Kaoru after he has been a wandering rurouni for ten years or so. One day he's walking down the streets of Tokyo and suddenly a woman attacks him, calling him the hitokiri battousai and accusing him of being a serial killer. He helps her defeat the evil man who has been defaming her dojo and in return she offers him a place to stay, and an end to his wandering years. Thus begins the story of Himura Kenshin and Kamiya Kaoru, a romance that has captured the hearts of an endless number of RK fans and fanfic writers.       Kaoru

I love Kaoru because she's not one of those whiny and annoying anime heroines who for some incomprehensible reason have fifty million bishounen falling in love with them. I know all of your minds are veering straight to Miaka of FY right now *grins* And for those of you who have called her whiny and annoying, I'll have to disagree vehemently. Miaka is whiny and annoying. Usagi is whiny and annoying. Kaoru is NOT whiny and annoying. Not that I have anything against Miaka or Usagi, but I don't think Kaoru would fall into such a category. Sure, she has moments where she's forced to play the helpless damsel in distress. But she can obviously hold her own against the average thug and the only time she's ever anything close to whiny is when Kenshin leaves for Kyoto, and that doesn't last long at all.

So Kaoru's a bit violent and hot-tempered. She's always getting mad at Sanosuke for being lazy and mooching off her dojo, she beats up Yahiko like any older sibling would, and she even whacks Kenshin every once in a while when he's being clueless. That's part of her charm I guess ^_^ I like a girl who can give as good as she gets, and Kaoru definitely knows how how to express herself. And if I had three unemployed males living with me and mooching off my income, I'd probably whack them now and again too. Even though she can't cook to save her life and is far from a perfect housewife, Kenshin doesn't seem to mind. In fact, he puts his own life on the line a countless number of times to save hers. And his enemies seem to understand this as well, since many of them try to get to him by hurting Kaoru. And yes, I do think Kenshin loves Kaoru, but I just wish he weren't so repressed and would actually say something *sigh*

I think Kaoru strikes the perfect balance between "tomboy" and "girly-girly". And I think she's perfect for Kenshin because she brings some fun into his life. She understands his past and is willing to accept it, but at the same time she knows that the rurouni will never be able to forget the part of him that is the Hitokiri Battousai. She doesn't like it, but she learns to deal. Kaoru offers Kenshin a real home for the first time in ten years, this gives him a chance to finally live a happy life. In my not so humble opinion, he'd be the biggest idiot if he didn't love her ^_^ In fact it's pretty obvious that their feelings for each other go way beyond platonic, and the end of the manga definitely proves me right since they get married and have a son named Kenji.
